WGSO….Heard around the globe!
Written by Easton Oreman on March 13, 2023
Warm greetings from Southern Finland!
We are Jari and Timo, two enthusiastic DXers in our early sixties who have been passionate about AM radio listening for over four decades. The thrill of catching distant signals from across the globe continues to inspire us every day.
We’re excited to share that we recently received your station, WGSO New Orleans LA on 990 AM, from a remote cabin in Northern Lapland, Finland—located approximately 4921 miles (air distance) from your transmitter. This cabin is more than 700 miles from our homes and lies roughly 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
Together with a third DX enthusiast, we’ve built a dedicated remote listening post at this location, which we access continuously via remote connection. The setup includes a 1250-meter-long beverage antenna, carefully oriented to optimize reception from both North and South America. The site is exceptionally quiet in terms of radio interference, thanks to its isolation from populated areas. We use a Perseus SDR receiver for signal capture.
We heard your station on December 5th, 2024 at 08:51 UTC (02:51 AM CST). Although the northern lights weren’t visible during the reception itself, they were a stunning presence during the construction of our listening station—a magical backdrop that made the experience unforgettable. We’ve attached a photo of the aurora borealis from that time, as well as a picture of us at the site.
Wishing you and your entire station team continued success and strong signals ahead. If you have any questions about our listening station or the DX hobby in general, we’d be delighted to share more.
With warm regards from the far north,
Jari & Timo DX Enthusiasts Southern Finland
